Seriously. 30 years of manufacturing experience and I had no clue the deck was stacked against me.

I can say that professionally, my male counterparts (bloggers mostly) are a tad patronizing -not that they realize it. I always thought it was because I worked in "fashion" manufacturing as opposed to something they considered "real". Even my husband (EEE rocket science engineer) was a bit similar (but never overtly) until he learned that comparatively, his job is a cake walk (his words). You can't quantify fabrics like machined materials; fabrics are much more complex, variable -and flimsy.

Btw, spatial skills are a relative strength of mine. In fact, I didn't know other people couldn't do that and thought they were lazy for needing a CAD program to model for them. I just didn't get it. Vocational testing in high school said I should be an aviation engineer but I had no idea what it was (it sounded boring and dirty). I wasn't encouraged because I couldn't pass basic math much less calculus. They'd ask me if you took two apples from three apples, how many apples would you have, and I always said two (I'm right, figure it out). When I got to the real world, my math ability soared and why I've been in manufacturing all these years now.

Btw, I can tell you where to find an undiscovered cache of potential female engineers and machinists. They're taking sewing classes. You can hook them by teaching them to make their own sewing jigs -out of cardstock even. I do it every day with instructions posted right on my website.kathleenhttp://www.fashion-incubator.comnoreply@blogger.com
